Sugar – A Film Review

Posted by realitypod on June 21, 2009

OK not every film ends with a happiness that everyone can relate too.. I certainly had to understand the complexities of this film and get my head round what was actually happening here. This film does not have an all star line up and its not your average Hollywood feel good factor film. What this film does give you is a wonderful insight to the American global buying power and how they have exploited this Dominican baseball pitcher in to the country and taking him on a journey through excitement, commitment, loneliness and the general feeling of an illegal alien and somehow finding a home and happiness in the BIG APPLE! Yep! New York!

Sugar, is about a young Dominican baseball Pitcher’s journey to fame and it takes you on a slow building emotional journey with many twists and turns that will make you realize just how this professional baseball player has had to move countries, leave his family and settle in a country who has little to offer his culture. This is a tall  dream of hope in order to achieve iconic status in the game of major league baseball.

He has to over come some real hard knocks in this journey to achieve what he really wants…… a place in the world where he finally feels accepted!

I really recommend going to see this film, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s account of a young Dominican pitcher’s experiences in the competitive world of US baseball is a powerful and ambitious follow-up to their startlingly assured feature debut (HALF NELSON). But just as their first film was not your average high school drama, nor is SUGAR even close to being just another American sports movie.

Enjoy!
