Today I ventured onto the London underground and I could definitely feel that there were less people going to work this morning. I have been out of the rat race for a while, so I don’t really have a good sense on how many people are traveling on the underground these days. It could be that the fares have gone up so people are taking other means of transport, like the buses or cycling and even skipping in the wake of an exciting job at other end of a lovely commute by foot.
Or it could be “dare I say it” the credit crunch effect on society… Many people in the city of london have been laid off. To be honest, I couldn’t really say, but I get the feeling that it’s a mixture of all the above that are contributing to a much better environment to be traveling by tube in the morning.
So the question is what are people doing? where are they?? What industries are they working in now? or I have to ask, what sectors are existing in todays massive change in economic fiscal development?
If people are at home most of the time, statistics tell me that most of them will be online. Either looking for a job, playing games, watching videos, catching up with their friends on the social networking scene. Or if they are at work, then they must be developing projects for online, either in a viral video form or producing online video advertising campaigns, developing e-commerce platforms, managing a database somewhere or assisting in the online marketing development of a site. If a business is in business today, they must be looking at making ways to communicate to their customers more effectively.
One market that is set to do pretty well over the next few years is The out of home digital video networks which is starting to take off in America, so if tests go well then we will be seeing these types of networks in europe. McDonald’s Expands In-Store Digital Network, McDonald’s has jumped on the bandwagon, rolling out a network of in-store screens in 20 locations. Check out this link to see the article in full McDonald’s . This is a classic move to capture the audience, and discovery channel and Disney are right to do this as we don’t know where are customers are at the moment. Fast food places are posting great profits this year, so customers must be going to Maccy D’s!
McDonald’s is working with Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company. Harris Digital Signage solutions will manage, monitor and play out the digital broadcast-quality video content for the McDonald’s Channel. According to Harris, the McDonald’s Channel will “present entertainment, infotainment, messaging and advertising to enhance the customer experience, reinforce the McDonald’s brand and broadcast focused promotional campaigns.”
I think this is a very forward thinking move and breaks down the traditional ways to advertise your products and services to your customers. New broadcast networks are needed and so are the revenues.
