I wanna setup a studio myself??

Yesterday I got a call from a recruitment company, asking advice on what they needed in order to set-up and record candidates. They want to communicate with customers more effectivity over the internet.  Its a great idea and a move which will see them as a cutting edge company for using technology in this way. They will only be doing one type of shooting, talking heads and interviews, so they only really need a one angle frame! They asked what do we need to get this going? Well, have you ever heard the phrase “Lights, Camera, action?” This is exactly what they need. It’s very important that your subject is well lit and there is no shadow on the face. This will give you a clear picture of your subject on camera. I gave them a small list of things to get, so I can come and set it up for them, here it is the below!

1. 2 x 500 watts continuous lights with umbrellas! This will be more than good enough to light up your subject and to ensure that the umbrellas won’t blind them!

2. A good HD camera with a microphone output.

3. Headphones, to plug into the camera so we can check the audio levels are correct.

4. Microphone & stand, I recommend a  Rode NTG-1 

5. Editing software to do the basic edit.

OK, I know this is a very basic list and I have not gone into specifics on what type of camera or editing software to use and they need to encode the video and then select a good publishing platform to upload their videos to the website. BUT this should give you some basic guidance and thought process on what is involved in setting up and getting the best for your online content on a budget!

The workflow process of recording, capturing, editing & encoding is a massive  subject, one that I can’t cover in this blog… So I will cover each topic specifically in 2009.

Don’t Blinkbox its real!

A couple of days ago, I talked about the quality of content online getting better. I never really thought it would happen this side of Christmas, but I have to say well done to Blinkbox.com

Blinkbox gains two Hollywood majors
Videoclips and download site Blinkbox has signed two new distribution deals with 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI). The London-based company has also extended an agreement with Warner Bros and has secured the download rights to a number of the studio’s most popular TV titles.

Blinkbox users will be able to download previous episodes of popular series including Smallville, Big Bang Theory and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. New episodes will be available the day after their UK transmission. Also available as ‘download to own’ are Friends, Gossip Girl, Babylon 5 and V.

The agreements bring the number of Hollywood majors distributing through Blinkbox to five.

“Although the economic climate is very tough, it’s been an exceptional year for Blinkbox,” said Blinkbox CEO Michael Comish. “We’ve managed to secure programming from the biggest and best studios in the industry and grow our audience to nearly half a million users a month. On demand and web services are one of the few growth areas of the entertainment industry, and with one of the best digital catalogues in the UK, we are well positioned to become the leading aggregator online. “

The Sony Pictures agreement will allow the digital purchase of movies including Taxi Driver and Snatch. Minisodes, excerpts from popular series, will also be available and drawn from shows including Bewitched, Charlie’s Angels, TJ Hooker, Starsky & Hutch and I Dream of Jeannie.

20th Century Fox will add download and rental titles including Juno, Moulin Rouge, Jumper, Fantastic Four, Ice Age and What Happens In Vegas.

Ooo Yes this is a major deal!

I had the pleasure of working with Dan Rayburn from 1999 – 2002 when he was head of the streaming media division at Globix Corp, or globix.com.
